Look. I love The Legend of Zelda as much as the next overly nostalgic adult who still refers to Breath of the Wild as "that game that healed me emotionally." But a live-action Zelda movie? After the Mario movie absolutely crushed it in animated form? Bold choice, Nintendo. Bold… and a little confusing. Like, Why not go animated?!
Today, in classic Nintendo fashion (a.k.a. random app notification at 3AM your time), they announced that Bo Bragason will play Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link in the upcoming live-action film, scheduled to release on May 7, 2027.
Now before you say, "Who?" - that's fair. Both actors are relatively fresh-faced, which could be great! Or terrifying! Bragason had a role in Disney+'s Renegade Nell and Ainsworth voiced Pinocchio in that very strange live-action version. So there's that.
Here's where I stand: I don't hate the casting. I don't even hate the idea. But I am a little thrown. Link doesn't talk. Zelda isn't your typical damsel. And Hyrule is… not the kind of world you casually CGI into something decent. Also: where is my animated Zelda movie that feels like Studio Ghibli and breaks me emotionally over a chicken in Kakariko Village?
Do we need this movie? Probably not.
Will I see it? Absolutely.
Will I complain the entire way there and then cry when the Deku Tree shows up? Also yes.
Let me know what you think, fellow Hylians. Are we cautiously hyped or preparing to scream into a clay pot?
